Fascinating paper now - Alan tribes moved from the North Caucasus to China in the Pax Mongolica, causing them to convert from Orthodoxy in their homeland to Catholicism which had reached China - leading to eg the Mongols sending a deputy of Alans and Genoese to the Pope to negotiate a new archbishop for Beijing.

holy shit.

Welp, handed in my 2 weeks notice. At the start of next month I am officially working for myself. (Well, working for a friend who runs a contracting company, to be honest, but OFFICIALLY it's for myself.)

Ok, I got good results before, so now I am going to ask for suggestions for books on . Specifically good, introductory texts on:

* Linear algebra, because it's super useful,
* Set theory and discrete , because it might actually run the universe,
* Number theory, because it's *cool*.

Suggestion: Mastodon should allow the use of backticks (`) to surround text that should be preformatted, preserving multiple spaces (even at the beginning of a line) and not interpolating usernames or hashtags (to allow the use of @ and #). github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/

Ok look I'm drunkfox

But if anyone has questions about I'm general or specifically let me know.

I like answering questions and have some perspective in the field both from theoretical and practical views. I might not know the answers but will be happy to find out.

Speaking if time-series, an underappreciated aspect of it is probably time commitment in multiplayer co-op games. Supreme Commander and Sins of a Solar Empire are in the 30+ minute category, Heroes of the Storm, Starcraft, Vermintide, Warframe, and Deep Rock Galactic are in the ~30min category, and Space Beast Terror Frighten and such are in the ~10min category.

Another time series distinction that afaict has received zero formal research.

I have put in thousands of hours on my poetry generator over the past three years. Thousands. It gets rough, sometimes I feel like I should get rid of the whole thing and simply write poems on my own.

But every so often, the computer writes something for me that makes it all worthwhile. Like tonight, when it gave me this line:

@natecull @icefox Victoria University's David Pearce is working on a language with proofs you might be interested in, Whiley.

The interface between and is a complex and fraught one. Now that I think of it... one is a view of objective reality as far from human context as possible and the other is a view of objective reality as close to human context as possible.

Now that I think of it, you know how could get good evidence for God? If we actually understand intelligence and creation well enough to figure out the probability of life this intelligent happening by chance and having it result in a probablity *far* below that suggested by chance, given the size of the universe.

It wouldn't be proof but it would be pretty convincing. It'd still be vulnerable to the Anthropic Principle but we could set firm-is bounds on it. Which is all science gets.

Man, Konrad Zuse was a cool cool guy. Basically invented computers from first principles, as far as I can tell, built some very advanced programmable computers in the 40's, and designed what might have been the first high-level programming language (PlankalkΓΌl).

There's a really great exhibit about him in the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin; very worth it, if you get a chance to go.

It might be time to take email back from GMail. Hmmm.

Does anyone have any suggestions for sources for an experienced programmer to learn modern-ish C++?
