@danielle Another thing in Mastodon's favour in relation to that problem is that you can't see how many times something has been boosted or favourited. That seems like it might help us focus more on what is being said rather than how much approval or attention it has attracted. It generally seems like a step in the right direction.

@danielle And I think we've already seen how that, over time, has led to a discourse dominated by those who are not focused on politeness. Which isn't always bad - I think that there are times when it has helped marginalised groups on Twitter resist tone policing - but it often amplifies the worst tendencies of (in particular privileged) groups, by quietening those who are more concerned about other people than they with scoring points.

(but you have to use the thumbs too)

@memnus Authentic or not the contrast comes out beautifully even in a photo.

One of the things I think about a lot is Terry Pratchett's brand of optimistic humanism. The later novels that focus on different professions seem sort of Nietzschean in their emphasis on the creation and importance of particular value in a context, rather than on abstract goods. "There is no Justice, there is just us" seems like a pithy summary of a certain sort of resistance against nihilism.

@signalstation 6) A shower always helps, at least a little bit.

I see you shiver with antici... Show more

@danielle Yes. Another aspect of that, for me, is that it feels like there's space to acknowledge uncertainty. I believe lots of things that I can express in 140 characters, but the interesting parts are usually the fuzzy edges of the belief, not the hard centre. And people meet at our edges.

@sonicbooming That's very much my experience. Weirdly, I think it's particularly bad if you're a "night time" person. Because (unless you're considerably more disciplined than I am) you lose all your personal productivity time to the working day. It sucks. Hope it isn't going to last too long for you.

@sonicbooming I've always hated late shifts. You seem to waste much more time both before and after work.

@EnFormeDePoire It's nice. I like having more characters than Twitter. I am naturally long winded though. I wish I could think of a "mastodon" and "trunk" joke to accompany that observation.

Hello! I'd like to make some friends! I am so very tired right now, having spent the day walking around town, feeding squirrels & dodging newly laid tarmac paths. Sleep is imminent! But I'd still like to hear from nice people. I've tended only to 'lurk' elsewhere so it's a bit of a test of myself here... I think I need hashtags, yes? Um... Stuff I like includes: ... I play the & + a bit of . I used to be really good at but now I'm not. You?

@Ipsifendus You can always cannibalise them for parts. And I find reading good games helps me run other games better. e.g. it's always worth reading Robin Laws, even if you're never going to run anything he's written.

Really want to run an Earthsea based campaign using FATE. I've been intending to run a game for my sister for ages. Anyone know if FATE Accelerated is a good introductory system for new tabletop RPG players?

@nsqe How in the name of Skeletor could anyone ever imagine that was a good idea?

@alan_butler I don't think there's any rush to make any particular social space "useful". If I go to a nice new bar, I might well spend a while talking about why I like it. Eventually the conversation moves on. For now, talking about what Mastodon is is a nice way to say hi to people - just like we're doing now.

@star_zero Hello! Hope you're having a good day! :)
