@postmodern Here are some ideas: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/177
I like the Blockchain approach, but there are some much easier concepts in this thread like adding a kind of forward header to the GNU Social protocol.
@postmodern Unique IDs are important for social profiles, as they aren't just random, interchangeable addresses or ID numbers, but a representation of a person and a node in a network of trust. Followers are not just neutral subscribers, but social capital you don't want to lose when switching servers.
Permanent, instance independent IDs add a second layer of decentralisation, as it makes changing instances much less costly.
@vorinstanz Octodon habe ich gewählt, weil es eine große Instanz ist, gute Uptime, IPV6 und gute Verschlüsselung. (Na ja, um ehrlich zu sein: Weil ein Degu das Maskottchen ist.)
Wer dahinter steckt: Keine Ahnung.
@ajroach42 Technically exiting is easy. Socially, not so much the longer an account exists. Relying on contacts to manually switch is increasing the social cost of switching.
I read the discussion on this ticket – there are some great ideas in it: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/177
.@ajroach42 If self-hosting is the answer, Mastodon is doomed to fail from the beginning.
The problem of trust can never be solved but by systemic checks and balances. Among them should be an easy exit option allowing to switch instances without losing one's social ties.
Man kann natürlich auf jede kritische Frage »geh doch selber hosten wenn's Dir hier nicht paßt« sagen.
Aber wenn das die Antwort ist, dann wird's halt nur ein weiterer Nerd-Circlejerk.
What's the deal with follow bots like @followbot?
What do they do that connecting with other instances can't?

Hier gibt's schon Ansätze, wie Account-Migration aussehen könnte:

@chris Even better!
@nunatak Huch! Da schaut man ein Jahr nicht vorbei, und dann sowas! @vorinstanz
@chris Exactly the opposite: My assumption is that Mastodon will evolve, and that's why I write about were I see the need for change.
@chris Yes, but you can improve portability to mitigate the reliance on just one server admin. At the moment, the server admin of my Mastodon instance is a single point of failure.
And yes, Bitcoins can be lost irretrievably and wallets be hacked, but so can login data.
@chris I don't think there's still a need for an ultimate authority. Blockchain technology is an example of separating important data from the servers processing it without a single instance with supreme authority.
@Moustache That's why the flag should be optional. Shitposting knows no borders.
@nunatak Ich hoffe es! Deshalb schreibe ich es auf.
Ein echter Account-Migrationsprozeß scheint mir technisch durchaus möglich zu sein.
@Moustache It should be opt-in. My use case: Tooting in different languages and giving my followers the option to only display those toots in languages they understand. I see this not as limiting my reach, but increasing it: At the moment it's not that interesting for non-German speakers to follow me, as most of my toots/tweets are German. But with a language flag I could easily internationalise my tooting which I normally don't do now to prevent flooding duplicate content.
