With all the wonderful and elaborate names for genres of video game ("real time strategy", "roguelike", "first person shooter", "massively multiplayer online role playing games"), it's amusing to me that fighting games are just known as "fighting games".

They're about fighting. You fight. Fighting games.

Oh god that's so weird if true because now that's a totally separate genre.

@fraggle I've also heard those referred to as "beat-'em-ups", but I haven't seen that much since the early 2000s.
