@r4v5 @SuzanEraslan Strongly second this approach.

Delany's _Stars in My Pocket like Grains of Sand_ is great & would be excellent to talk about in a club. To begin with, you could discuss why the second planned book in the series will most likely never be written. It would also be good to pair _Stars_ with his _Times Square Red, Times Square Blue_.

But I'd start with one of the others. Partly bc they're slightly shorter, partly bc hey, why start with the guy when you've got those options!

@cws I doubt that all the bots follow this convention, but at least some will respect a `` in your bio. Maybe that'll help reduce the frustration?

it's so bizarre that everyone's judgment of mastodon's success uses the same rubric as twitter's success.

for me, marginalized ppl feeling loved, cared for, and supported in a radical, restorative space is a success and I don't think forbes will ever understand that

@u2764 I haven't yet read her 2016 book _The Intersectional Internet: Race, Sex, Culture, and Class Online_, but Safiya Umoja Noble's work might be in the vein of what you're after? safiyaunoble.com/bio-cv/

@starkatt I definitely did. Looked at the various "open for new users" instances, read a few instances's "about" pages, then looked at @CobaltVelvet's toots & tweets, then finally skimmed her Pelican page.

But then, I'm a librarian. Information is my jam.

Many paywalled academic papers are available for free elsewhere (legally!). The Unpaywall browser extension helps to find them: unpaywall.org

FAQ: unpaywall.org/faq (explains e. g. the difference between Unpaywall and Sci-Hub)

I really like it so far! #openaccess

So I thought it'd be a cool privacy feature for Mastodon to automatically strip EXIF metadata from photos (e.g. GPS latlong, date, etc.). Turns out Eugen already thought of that! 😁 github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/

I even checked some uploaded photos with ImageMagick; they're all empty! BTW here's the EXIF data from a typical photo I took on my Nexus 5X. I really did have to make the text that small to fit.

Jot to not-now-Ryan: sign up for oulipo.social soon. Probably tomorrow.

Interesting. At least for @follow_dragon, you can use `` in yr bio to keep from being en-bot-enated. Seems like a simple, polite practice that other followbots could easily emulate.

Just after midnight here, so of course part of my brain just decided it's ok to consider writing. That's basically the only reliable sign I have of a circadian rhythm.

'd Love to find more open-minded LGBTQ people on here but a hashtag search doesn't take me out of the federated timeline so I need boosts or recommendations. #LGBTQ

@falsemirror I've always thought it'd be a weird, interesting kind of "graffiti"/"installation art" to somehow affix flash drives in public places, with some kind of static website files on them. I've never figured out the content or the process, but that's the first scenario that leaps to mind for ones that small. If you get a 4gb and you don't already use Tails, maybe try Tails?

OK all Mastodon instance admins. What kind of bandwidth usage are you seeing... wanting to set this up on azure, but don't want to kill myself with bandwidth charges.

Alternative, give me a fictional detective that is, yanno, queer instead of just having a weird personality but ultimately very normal.

✨ It's live! My start to finish guide for getting your own #mastodon instance up and running with Docker on Ubuntu 16.04: github.com/ummjackson/mastodon

I've tested this on both Vultr and DigitalOcean and the instructions should be pretty much copy/paste for everyone. Hope this helps some people! πŸ˜€

Good luck and feedback appreciated!! (cc @Gargron / @TonyNof / @david / @vielmetti / @lmorchard )

@Areya Same. I completely appreciate what @CobaltVelvet is doing here, so I hope my last hasty tweet didn't sound impatient!

What's weird is that I'm able to load more consistently via Amaroq than in the web browser. I don't know the workings of Mastodon enough to know if that implies a certain reason, just a pattern I'm noticing at the moment.
