«The Black feminist scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw once wrote "Treating different things the same can generate as much an inequality as treating the same things differently."»

The latest Made-in-Britain Tory political scandal is the "fuck the algorithm" A-level grades omnishambles, in which the Conservative party deployed a black-box algorithm to give rich students higher grades and poor students lower ones.

pluralistic.net/2020/08/18/fif

This has resulted in many students who'd been offered places in universities having those offers rescinded based on their "disappointing" final grades.

@dansup Hey. Tried signing up at two different @pixelfed servers tonight (because I wasn't able to at the first), and got this error message when pressing the Register button at both pixelfed.fi and pixfed.com. You think it's their fault or some bug in the sofftware? Thank you!

OMG, TIL about the amazing @ReverseEagle community!

They make the @switchingsoftware website helping people find great FOSS alternatives to software.

But maybe even cooler is their RE Developers work, where they work to get FOSS devs to stop using Google tools!

They list alternatives to Google tools used by devs, and they contact the devs asking them to switch.

This is great work!

Til that what's left of Opera Software AS after they sold the namesake browser to China is now called Othello Corporation, and that some kind of investment fund or something (Sand Grove) that ownes about 25% of it has called for an extraordinary general meeting to elect a new chairperson of the board (Randel Freeman) and a new board member, just weeks after the ordinary general meeting.

@forteller I think the main benefit (regardless of outcome) is that now a lot more people are aware that there are issues with giving a monopoly power to decide what apps should be available and how they are allowed to work. Usually people are fine with it because they're not (or don't know that they are) affected by the consequences. Now that a lot more people are affected it gets press, and if we're lucky – even politicians or consumer protection orgs will take note.

So what does the freedom loving, presumably Apple hating, fediverse think of this Epic vs Apple fight?

This video makes valid points; namely that both companies are terrible billionaires with the same practices, and you shouldn't fight for them youtu.be/v96QyJczIi

But it misses 2 important points IMHO:
1. The 1984 reference is a clever play on Apples famous ad. Though still tone deaf.
2. If Epic wins, that might mean an end to the 30% Apple tax for a ton of non-billionaire devs. Important!

Are thereanyone in the Wikipedia/Wikimedia community that's specialized in contributing by fixing up photos by others before uploading them to Commons and using them in articles?

That would be a great way for someone to use their skills to contribute, IMO.

I've taken a lot of pics from parks around Oslo this summer, and want to donate them to Wiki*, but they need a bit of fixing up to be as good as they can be.

For internet users of a certain generation, the "where were you when JFK was shot" moment is "when did you first see Goatse.cx?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goatse.c

It wasn't the first grossout image on the web and it's certainly not the worst one, but it's got first-mover advantage that made it absolutely iconic.

There is now a Mastodon instance for publishing scientists: FediScience.

Everyone is welcome from PhD student to professor, as well as researchers from outside of academia. You are welcome to stay afterwards, but it is also easy to change to another server.

There will be a lot of science talk on this server, but there is no need to only talk science

Boosts are appreciated to let others know about this new instance.

Why do I feel so strongly positive aabout this action? Data breaches or modification have huge externalities, and insecure-by-default deployments are a huge part of the problem:

One of the first publicly known examples of a Meow attack is an Elasticsearch database belonging to a VPN provider that claimed not to keep any logs.

Other targets include #MongoDB #Cassandra #CouchDB #Redis #Hadoop #Jenkins, and unsecured network-attached storage devices (NAS).

Any pros on here who can tell me if there's a tag for the following?

1) publicly available trees and plants with edible fruit/berries, meant for public consumption.

2) Stores that sell food cheaper near the end of the day to avoid food waste.

Thanks!
