@sydneyfalk @fallerOfFalls Being "bitchy" is also a behaviour that men and women both enact. But I think most feminists will agree it is a term best avoided. The same arguments apply, IMO.

'Bitchy' has started to enter common parlance but has a history that is unsavory on its face.

'Mansplain' is much more recent, and refers to a far more specific behavior backed up by a social inequality.

I don't see them as analogous, and the arguments that they are don't jibe, IMO.

(also also: One last thing I just noted in that response -- the fact 'feminists' will suggest avoiding 'bitchy' is because it's a sexist term, but also reinforces actual sexist tropes. The fact men suggest avoiding 'mansplaining' is not something I understand, because I assume they'd want their explanations to be useful and therefore would want to know if they 'mansplain'.)

I tend to avoid 'bitchy' in public comm to avoid reinforcing that language. I avoid 'mansplain' so that I don't end up targeted by MRAs in vast numbers and have to shut further amounts of the internet away from myself.

I spend a lot of time worrying about how to not offend men that way. I don't have that worry about offending women that way, even if I do take steps to not offend them.
