Rocking in a hammock is almost as fun as riding your bike downhill, but more relaxing.

In which I take back another part of my digital life and step up to actually own it. This time it's setting up my own file-syncing replacement for Dropbox/Google Drive with @nextcloud.

"Kite is a DIY kit that empowers you (and everyone) to build a smartphone, irrespective of skill level. A screwdriver is required, but no other tools."

I love that these more homebrew phone/laptop projects are springing up, usually with a power to the people ethos which is cool. From a longevity perspective though, long term software and spare parts support is important, and sometimes hard for small projects.

Has anyone in our professions written about how libraries are intensely consortial/cooperative enterprises when we talk about cross-institutional work, but it contrasts with how deeply hierarchical most are governed internally? Who should I be reading on this?

We just released our new collaborative #music album, "Everything Is Made Of Smaller Parts"!

16 of us musicians on Mastodon banded together to create music in randomly assigned pairs and the results are beautiful and span many genres.

You can listen and download the 11 songs for free - if you decide to pay, the money is split between the artists, one share goes to Mastodon development.

I hope you enjoy the music and have a fabulous Sunday!

the #backfire effect ( #bias)

'The Misconception:
When your beliefs are challenged with facts, you alter your opinions and incorporate the new information into your thinking.

The Truth:
When your deepest convictions are challenged by contradictory evidence, your beliefs get stronger.

In an age where we're being inundated with so much information, #criticalthinking is the most important defensive weapons we have... so why not sharpen that blade from time to time? Found some really excellent sites where #logicalfallacies and #bias are clarified in a very user friendly way. A little bit of back pocket #philosophy for you!

while #telegram is down (at least for some) take this as an oportunity to reflect:
- do you rely on a centralized service
- telegram runs on proprietary software
- it can't federate and creates by that something known as 'walled gargen'
- there are great alternatives you might like

#matrix (federated protocoll) -> about.riot.im/
#xmpp (federated protocoll) -> conversations.im/ , #jabber ...

Another big thing...

We say that Lundgren should not have installed Windows. Perhaps he should have installed Linux....

Many of your devices, you don't own. You "lease." Even the act of wiping the original operating system and installing FOSS OS's is illegal.

Look at John Deer. Look at "rooting" cell phones.

We need FOSSH (Software & Hardware) solutions.

@ewankeep Thanks for posting about this. I picked up a copy and have been reading through it. Very interesting!

This is why I only use & support Free & Open Source Software in my personal life. This man is going to prison. Prison.

"A California man who built a sizable business out of recycling electronic waste is headed to federal prison for 15 months after a federal appeals court in Miami rejected his claim that the “restore disks” he made to extend the lives of computers had no financial value, instead ruling that he had infringed Microsoft’s products to the tune of $700,000."
