Galaxies sometimes collide. When they do gravity causes an incredible display played out over billions of years as shown in this simulation. Interestingly because of the great distances between the stars, collisions between individual stars are quite rare during this.

@tammas The colours are just the disk material of the two galaxies (cyan and red) and the core material (magenta and green).
The dark matter halos were used in the simulation but not shown in the animations for clarity.
