Dashes and alphanumerics, nothing else. BoingBoing used to annoy me by putting apostrophes in theirs. -idea-doesn't-work

"Creotard" is an interesting formation, from a linguistic POV. Somehow "leotard" has crept into the general "-tard" class and been assimilated. As an indication of someone who doesn't even think about HOW he's communicating, let alone what he's saying, it's quite a useful indicator.

@pzmyers
The stress is all that kept you going!

I think it's the same mind-over-matter effect that leads to a spike in deaths in January, after old people keep on living for one last family Christmas and then let themselves go (and die) once the milestone is reached.

Me, I get fluoid symptoms after major work projects or travelling holidays. C'est la vie.

@sciss
The English word cretin comes from the same French word. If I remember rightly, there was a village of people with congenital brain defects. The name cretin (chretien) was applied to remind people that, however stupid they were, they were still Christians.

@pzmyers
If only you'd followed the example of every other moderately famous white male and sexually molested a few dozen women or boys, by now you would have lots of MRAs and clueless old women defending you and making you feel accepted. Boy did you miss out!

2048: The Text Adventure

You are in a small room. There is a tile on the floor in the north west corner, marked with the number two in ancient hieroglyphics. If you move, the floor will tilt and tiles may move or fall from the ceiling.

>GO EAST

The "two" tile slides to the northeast corner. A new tile marked with a two falls from the crumbling ceiling and lands with a dusty thud just south of the middle of the room.

Read your blog post about Mastodon. I suspect you're right. And here's an addition to your "regrettable terminology" lament: the word "toot". It's stupidly twee, and may be giving the wrong impression in some way. But I plan to stick around on this instance, octodon.social, and see if its aggressive moderation policy actually works.

@TQ
Hi, random person whose "toot" I just read! Did you know that in pre-Republican Rome, they had ten months, March to December (that's why Sep/Oct/Nov/Dec come from the Latin for 7/8/9/10) which they followed with a long, unnumbered "winter" in which nothing happened. So your idea has a long, rich history to it. Not bad for a "toot"!

@Siphonay
Crazy and incompetent. I support efforts to hunt down those programmers and have them beheaded!

@Siphonay
I've tried and failed in the past. I believe it's not even changeable if you do change the user's name!

But that suggests a solution. Suppose your user name is Fred and your home directory is c:\User\Fred, but you want to make it c:\User\Wilma. Create a new user called Wilma, copy your files over, delete the Fred account, and change the user name to Fred. Directory will remain \Wilma and you've got what you wanted... in theory.

NB:

(Mastodon, not *Mastadon. The app I use is Mastalab, and an earlier search for "mastodon" ("I'll just google that on Bing" © Stilgherrian) turned up nothing about this platform, so I mistakenly assumed the variant spelling applied.)

Playing whackamole with the Mastadon search function: search for a hashtag like or , find "toots" (ugh!) that use them unironically, Block, repeat. Feed is thus incrementally improved. In Twitter, this would be like pissing on the surface of the sun to cool it down, but here there's a chance.

@pzmyers
Hey, you're quite old, like me. Remember back when Nazis were in the past? Great days, great days...

@pzmyers
Makes sense. Twitter never tempted me: I don't hate women enough -- hell, I don't even own a fedora! This looks much better.

"Toot" is a silly name, but the admin's heart and brain are in the right place. So...

Hello, world!
