people who know nothing about communism, feminism, race relations, or queer theory convincing themselves pretending they do also makes them experts in literary criticism, which they also do not know anything about, and therefore all their ill-considered and reductive opinions carry the weight of moral imperatives, has been an unmitigated disaster
more seriously, the basic mistake underlying most of what passes for media criticism in the kind of spaces most people on here are likely to frequent is that criticism exists, not to enable us to understand works better, but to decide for us which works are morally good (and confer moral goodness on us) and which aren't (and make us morally bad)
