the standard narrative about 'trolls' or 'media provocateurs' (the only difference is class background) is that engaging with them negatively is giving them what they want, but this narrative is one they, themselves, create. you can always tell behind the paper-thin layer of 'ah, i actually enjoy it when strangers insult and mock me,' they're frothing with rage
it's the same thing as neo-nazis constantly pushing the narrative deplatforming and counter-violence somehow actually help them. why would you take your opponents' claims about what benefits and what harms them seriously? liberals do, b/c they live in a fantasy world where everyone is magically compelled to 'play by the rules', and b/c they're not really opposed, but why would you?
