Really, asking "what should replace Facebook" is putting things the wrong way around.
A more interesting way to ask the question is, "what did Facebook replace."
People used to build their own websites. People used to have blogs. People used USENET which was truly distributed and un-censorable.
Facebook and Google took the open internet and open standards and monetized and made everything crappy. Enough of that. Nothing should replace Facebook, it's done, stick a fork in it.
@cwebber Emacs is my first choice, but I'm open to trying new things!
@cwebber I'll have to check it out!
@cwebber This looks interesting!
I've played with Racket before, but I haven't used it seriously.

Facebook and privacy, fighting back Show more
@ajroach42 @chosafine@instance.business
I misunderstood what your post was referring to. I thought that you were referring to a widely-boosted post saying that it would be bad for privacy if people switched from Facebook to Mastodon and started using Mastodon the way they use Facebook.
@ajroach42 @chosafine@instance.business
Were these people claiming that Facebook has good privacy controls? Or were they saying that the Fediverse has almost no privacy controls?
Mastodon is not designed to keep people's posts or their social graphs private. I want more people to use Mastodon, but I also want new Mastodon users to understand that their social graphs are public and that "status privacy" isn't totally reliable on a distributed network.
I may have to avoid Mastodon until this #DeleteFacebook thing blows over.
It's pushing all my "people being wrong on the Internet" buttons. All of them.
Friends! Stop being idiots! Please!
The fact is, the Fediverse does not protect your data or the social graph AT ALL. Anyone who wants to harvest your data, can. It's virtually all 100% public!
At least Facebook has some speedbumps.
If we replaced Facebook with the Fediverse tomorrow, privacy would suffer immeasurably.
