A lot of the worries about “security” on Mastodon disappear if people run their own instances. I think that this should be the goal for the long run.
@edavies that's a farcical expectation to have for anyone but technical elite.
@Daenyth What's farcical is that our systems are such a mess that only the “technical elite” can do something like that, something which really ought to be trivial.
@edavies running own instance gives one a lot of control but trade-off is the ongoing system administration burden. That's not a trivial cost I think. (I am NOT running an instance.)
