Oh, yippee skip:
$ sudo apt upgrade
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
Setting up man-db (2.9.1-1) ...
Updating database of manual pages ...
man-db.service is a disabled or a static unit, not starting it.
…and then it just hangs.
…and then it got worse. Dialog box popped up offering a “partial upgrade”. Clicked OK and that failed in the same leaving the GUI (MATE) completely borked. Decided to do a clean reinstall (Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1) so did a few additional backups from the terminal overnight (everything except Saturday's email and work was backed up anyway but better not to rely on single copies) and reinstalled today. Slowly getting back to normal.
Can't decide if I hate the computer or building industries more.
