*snark*
A mid-twenties guy behind me in line in the grocery store adressed me as 'Miss' when asking a question today.
I stayed polite. But I'm about 30 years older than anyone normally called that. 'Ma'am' maybe? I do answer to 'Excuse me?' too.

Still sniggering slightly

@divineeris I taught my kid to just use ma'am and sir, because she had been using girl or lady, and man.

@KnotKnormal In Swedish sir/ma'am/miss sounds slightly stilted and off. You express politeness mainly by dropping references to persons or using some passive construction.
Otoh we don't have the word "please" either - I have to stay alert when in an English speaking country not to slip up

@divineeris Well, she's five now, and i think I started teaching her these a little after three, because when she wanted to get someone's attention she'd just say "Lady? Lady?", etc. It was a bit awkward.
