@Scavenger You're absolutely right about beying concerned about win10 regarding advertising and spying. I'm not on Win10 either.
I agree that's a bad situation.
More important than an antivirus solution is applying the patches anyway. So if you're on a supported Windows version (7, 8.1) and make sure to update you already did the most of the work.
Antivirus won't help if malware can exploit bugs in windows.
A good start can be http://www.wsusoffline.net/ if you have more than one windows pc

@Scavenger Oh sorry, ESET is not free. I missed that.
The free ones all suck or annoy by ads. Really wouldn't recommend

@Scavenger If you're on Windows 10: use Windows defender and apply all patches asap they're released.
The only 3rd party product I can recommend after using it myself is ESET.
I wouldn't recommend Symantec-AV since it's so big and slows down stuff.

@Kent For normal news (like, not IT-related politics and economics) I usually use radio when I drive to/from work, the station is paid by some kind of tax (like Deutsche Welle). Public broadcasting in Germany is hard to explain.
On my RSS feeds I use the same, b/c it's kinda neutral, and some feeds from newspapers (german). One left winged, one conservative. I think that's a balanced mix.
I don't have facebook :)
