@Scavenger If you're on Windows 10: use Windows defender and apply all patches asap they're released.
The only 3rd party product I can recommend after using it myself is ESET.
I wouldn't recommend Symantec-AV since it's so big and slows down stuff.

The free ones all suck or annoy by ads. Really wouldn't recommend
