The sheer amount of female objectification was so clear that it feels like it was on purpose- combined with a central reveal being K finding out someone he assumed was a boy was actually a girl - there may be some unpacking to do of the role sexism and femininity plays in 2049.

For sure - it was so blatant and persistent in the film that you really hope that it was in service of a larger point... That said, my partner, my best dude friend, and I talked about it immediately after, and it truly felt like any explanation we came up with was a bit of a strain.

@scottschuman @jjray I so feel that! Plus all the recent hollywood stories make me so less charitable towards film-makers. The Whedon incident in particular. There comes a point when you have to say Nope, this is a problem and should be addressed explicitly in the film or you don't get a pass.
I can still love the film while objecting to certain aspects.

@jjray @scottschuman I agree that it could be done on purpose, and a commentary on sexism etc., but none of the characters in the film acknowledge it in any way. That I spotted maybe I missed it? I think it was certainly something the makers wanted to highlight, just not sure they made it explicit enough that all these tits everywhere isn't such a great idea.

@dearbhla @scottschuman @jjray I really appreciated the Fanfare comments on BR2049 by codacorolla and Calzephyr. And my feeling is most Leto scenes were superfluous build-up for that *big spoiler to describe* scene

I'm going to have to see this dumb movie at some point. It is disappointing to hear that it isn't much better about women than the original. Blade Runner is one of my favorites, but at this point we should really have a thoughtful, attractive SF movie that isn't crap about women.

@scottschuman Not sure why Leto was so "Eeevvviiillll" to be honest. He could have been a more normal driven business-man which would have had a greater effect. Plus tie in the the dangers of business at all cost mentality.
