Oh, neat. I've been micro-loaning via Kiva since 2008. Now they have "Kiva Cards" so if you want to check out Kiva, but want to use my money not yours to do so let me know and I'll buy you a Kiva Card. (I'm no millionaire, so this is a limited volume offer :)) https://www.kiva.org/gifts/kiva-cards
huh. Apparently I'm due/overdue for more vaccinations?

What are these and why didn't my GP shoot me up with them at my annual physical? Influenza is my fault, I've been too lazy to schedule yet another appointment.
Oh! Happy Transgender Awareness Week! (I was not aware, gotta switch flags in front of my cult house in the woods!) https://www.glaad.org/transweek
Oh, nice. If you want to challenge my ethical philosophy (Utilitarianism) you could do worse than Star Trek: Voyager S1E13 "Faces"
B'Elanna: You've killed him!

Oh, wow, 2013 Xerox compression problems. NOT OCR bugs. The YouTube vid is good too. https://www.dkriesel.com/en/blog/2013/0802_xerox-workcentres_are_switching_written_numbers_when_scanning
@deafferret There’s been a useful reckoning happening there the last several years. Here’s a good podcast ep about it https://www.americamagazine.org/politics-society/2019/05/31/georgetown-jesuits-enslaved-her-ancestors-now-shes-working-justice
Wha? The US average wage has risen 35% in the last 10 years? That's way higher than I would have guessed, good news? https://qz.com/2086977/there-is-no-truck-driver-shortage-in-the-us/
Aww man I thought the Jesuits were the thoughtful / intellectual Catholics. Plot twist: they sold slaves at Georgetown https://pca.st/episode/b9a39d56-c790-4d26-8e37-9e8fbdd8f27c
Some critters photographed from the veranda this afternoon. The White-browed Scrubwren could be sharper, but it was in the shade and didn't sit still. The Brown Thornbill prefered a little leaf cover, but at least sang at me. And there's a blue dragonfly of some sort which obligingly stayed still while I manually focussed.
@deafferret Well, 0.27 seconds are noticeable.
Presumably the reaction time of dogs brains + muscles + human brains is slower than the light / sound difference at that distance.
Pretty sure this is scientifically false under my conditions, but I just observed the speed of light is faster than the speed of sound:
Super windy day, I'm ~100 yards from my truck. Dog is standing next to the truck. I hit my remote to make the truck honk and I saw his head whip toward the truck (startled) before I heard the truck honk. #science
But it denies that our systemic problems could be fundamentally improved so the sludge / grind of millions of jobs could, for example, pay a living wage to workers. I don't think that's too much to ask of employers. Especially large ones.
But 99.9% of the content makes it sound like "suck it up" and "power through" and "leave" are the only options for workers. That the system is what it is and nothing can be done, individuals have to be mobile and flexible and find a better deal. Yes, that's true and possible for millions of us, and we should do that.
