I am convinced the real meaning of the GDPR is that of a declaration of independence of Europe from the colonial control of the GAFAM on the data economy. As is routinely the case with independences, it won't be accepted easily
@dataKnightmare Interesting take. One thing's for sure - it's going to be expensive for many organisations to implement correctly. GAFAM - Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft?
@rosjackson I see another plus in the GDPR: since treating personal data bears a cost, maybe somebody will start thinking whether they *actually* need as many personal data for their business (answer: they don't)
@dataKnightmare I hope the effect will be good for users, consumers, and data subjects. It's not going to be cheap in the UK, thanks to the need for a Data Protection Officer. So the risk has shifted from ordinary people getting their data compromised onto being a risk for organisations from the ICO. The potential fines should concentrate minds.
