I never quite know how to feel about the use of my given name. I don't want to undermine the norm that deadnaming is considered offensive, but I don't share that feeling about my own name? For myself, I have a long personal and professional history as "Daniel", "Dan" and "Danny". I didn't hide "Danny" when I became "Dan". Similarly, I don't want to obscure or disavow "Daniel" when becoming "Danielle" either. I can't be the only transgender person who feels like that, can I?

@danielle One of the developers of M.U.L.E. was named Dani Bunten. I think she went through the same thing that you did.

So, it's not uncommon.

@danielle You're not alone. I'm still calling my old name 'deprecated' rather than 'dead'. My sister has been all up in my parents business about slip-ups, and I've had to correct her pretty hard about the level of offense that 'deadnaming' means for me.

@sysadmin1138 Oh, I like that a lot. There's a gentle suggestion that folks should start shifting away from it, but it's not forbidden and I'll support it for as long as feasible. Backward compatibility matters, damn it.

@danielle And there are levels of deprecation notice, too.

1) Documented, with occasional reminder.
2) Verbal warnings on use.
3) Error messages.
