How did I miss this? Talk "Build a Better Monster: Morality, Machine Learning, and Mass Surveillance" by Pinboard founder Maciej Cegłowski (ht @cynix ):
"Ideally, we can find a way to have decentralized social networks, just like we do in real life."
"Opting out of a site like Google would mean opting out of much of online life (...) [a consumer boycott] is not something we can mobilize a mass movement around."
"We built the commercial internet by mastering techniques of persuasion and surveillance that we’ve extended to billions of people, including essentially the entire population of the Western democracies. But admitting that this tool of social control might be conducive to authoritarianism is not something we’re ready to face. After all, we're good people. We like freedom. How could we have built tools that subvert it?"

Just for your information:
The bomb attack on the german soccer team (where there they found letters with islamists taking the responsibility for it) was committed by someone short-selling stock options for that soccer club. The guy has just been arrested....
The shooting in Paris is probably not different. Instead of dragging down the stock options of a club, the extremists just want to boost the election chances of their fellow extremist.
The other day someone told me I could make ice cubes out of leftover wine. I was confused... What is leftover wine?
Every time you get dressed remember that, if you die, that's your ghost outfit forever. FOREVER.
I'm glad that we as humans settled on the hand shake as a greeting instead of the whole ass sniffing thing.

I just released v0.4.1 of mastodon.el.
New HTML rendering should fix new line issues, tag references (full URL vs #emacs), and handle references (full URL vs @johnson).
All URLs can be visited ENTER, including tags and handles, assuming you can access some kind of browser from your Emacs.
The mastodon-version function is fixed and actually works now.

"Google ... seem to be subtler but just as devoted to pulling me into their corporate bubble, where I become an unpaid 'content provider' who lures people into being tracked and getting hand-crafted advertisements. Conversations on G+ were sufficiently interesting at first that I was willing to not worry about this. Now they're rarely interesting."

Perhaps the ultimate purpose of Google+ is to introduce Mastodon users to each other ;-)
I made a #neuralnet and trained it on trumps speeches/interviews.
It gets seeded with new tweets/news articles and then tweets a generated anwers.

Beware of Phishing Attacks
IDN Attacks seem to be back gain:
"This loophole allowed the researcher to register a domain name xn--80ak6aa92e.com and bypass protection, which appears as “apple.com” by all vulnerable web browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, and Opera, though Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari, Brave, and Vivaldi are not vulnerable."
