Interesting: if I "favorite" someones toot, s/he gets a "plop" message and a notification in its stream. If I remove the "favorite" again, nothing happens on the receiver's side.

So one can "favorite" certain toots and sometime later still do a "cleanup" so the favorites column only contains stuff for later perusal.

I'm digging this time lapse photo of birds I ran across. Looks like a tape tornado. Others here: timewheel.net/amazing-chronoph

If you like #mastodon you would have loved the internet in the late 90s.

Here's your one and only chance to take that back. No, not only on twitter.

Don't centralize your life. Don't rely on a single corporation helping them accumulate too much power. Like Facebook or GMail.

Diversify and try to control your own data.

Thema Garten

Ernstgemeinte sachdienliche Hinweise gerne an mich. Merci beaucoup.

@Masek @hennejg mobile or desktop? On the desktop (in Google Chrome) I see posts from 11 minutes ago right now, but "prefaced" by some older ones with the new G+ note of "What you missed" (which I thought of as we don't have enough new stuff, so here's some older stuff ;-0)

Good night to you all for now, a nice glass of red wine and a nice ebook are waiting offline for me.

@CobaltVelvet that's fine with me, I just wanted to point this out, in case it was more serious. Thanks for keeping the site running!

You thought the /Juicero/ was the most ridiculous /Internet of Shit/ thingy? Think again, after you've watched this video about the Wi-Fi enabled wine bottle:

"The pressing ethical questions in machine learning are not about machines becoming self-aware and taking over the world, but about how people can exploit other people, or through carelessness introduce immoral behavior into automated systems."

It's the text version of Maciej Ceglowski's speech "Superintelligence: The Idea That Eats Smart People", shared by @dredmorbius (mammouth.cafe/users/dredmorbiu).

Tip for newcomers (4):

You can search for individual posts with a URL in order to bring them into your stream so that you can boost and favorite them.

Why is this necessary? Let's say that you're looking at someone's profile page and see something interesting. You just click on the time stamp to bring up that unique URL, copy it and past it into search. Works like a charm (for me at least)

@chris nice job with the translator. Maybe it could even return more than one translation in a future version?

Side note: if I try to expand your toot about it (by clicking on the "6 hours ago" timestamp) I'm taken to toot.works/users/chris/updates and receive the message "The page you were looking for doesn't exist."
