And then there are hierarchies of who can criticize what in what ways; if, say, I made a criticism of a game for not being "fun" (whatever that means), I would not have gotten the same backlash as I would for criticising a game for being fun-but-reproducing-structures-of-sexism.

You know what? I *will* just write a blog post, this is silly.

Tension b/w academia, several classes of experts, players and fans;

- my read of the field is that academics are playing catchup and also all the interesting stuff is not in mainstream games studies (sorry y'all ludology vs narratology is just *boring*)
- there's a real tendency to more heavily weigh the words of practitioners in the space (not a knock on them! merely an observation).
^ And those two are set up in opposition to each other, broadly, but don't forget...

In class rn, topic is on being a public intellectual; interesting (and upsetting) to think about trying to stake a place as a public intellectual within my field of queer and feminist video game studies.

By which I mean: there's the tension b/w academia and what I'll call vernacular theory--from devs, players, writers--but also the field is so heavily politicized and charged, safety concerns are also brought up (tbc)

@ikea_femme it's kinda got me wondering, is there a (#queer) #Deaf community on Mastodon? Or groups of sign language learners—I only know a little #ASL myself.

@ikea_femme Hell yes! Very rewarding. Plus, learning new languages is fun (if you're into that kinda thing)! And sign language grammars are v interesting + use of nonmanuals e.g. facial expressions are super cool etc. etc.

(I met my girlfriend at an ASL class we were attending so I may be biased)
