@cwebber "The Little Protocol Spec That Maybe Could in Certain Circumstances"

this was a bad storytime to tell myself before bed I guess

tfw you hear CPU noises merely in response to moving your mouse in some application and you start spiraling thinking about research showing just how much information can be leaked by listening to your CPU with a goddamned ordinary microphone

I also feel compelled to say: while I've dropped my main source of income, I'm not at serious risk of being kicked out of my apartment or etc and many people are on harder times. I'm doing contracting and I have a savings buffer. Partly I am trying to put my excess privilege to good use because I don't think there are many people who are in the position I'm in who *can* and have the experience I do.

If it's between donating to me and something more urgent in your life, take care of yourself.

remembering when, about a decade ago, I was unemployed and @j1mc looked at my awful LaTeX article class resume and politely rewrote it (still in LaTeX!) so that it looked presentable

that was a nice thing

In my #LibrePlanet2018 keynote (mako.cc/copyrighteous/librepla) I argued that online collaborative production is shifting from social to market-based arrangements. This paper explores the implications. (As is clear in the talk, part of this paper's results motivated the whole argument!)

My new paper tries to identify some of what is lost as market-based "sharing economy" platforms increasing replace socially-oriented systems based on actual sharing: mako.cc/copyrighteous/what-we- (The paper was led by @notconfusing who will present it at @CSCW next month!)

Ah nice, @bobcallme@social.bobcall.me is here! That's a good call.

The biggest challenge I don't have an answer to in the distributed virtual worlds stuff is how to deal with persistence. erights.org/data/serial/jhu-pa has a lot of ideas. However I think I disagree... it may be that the best approach is to give the hive/vat a core operation type so that it can "snapshot" the current state of the objects occasionally rather than having a special actor that does it. I'm unsure.

Also, a few people donated already since I made this post. THANK YOU. Seriously.

I think when I get to $500/month I'll have some peace of mind that I can probably pull this off, and once I get to $1500/month I should be able to afford this wild decision to jump headfirst into this... but I expect getting to that will probably be a while off. I probably need to deliver demos for people to believe this is real.
