I've gotten some questions: does it really make sense to plan to build a distributed game system as part of the fediverse? Will that actually pay off or is it just one big gamble?

I think:
- Having things be fun for players/users may make them more likely to join. People want to build things together. May help alleviate the "join a federated social network to talk about federated social networks" problem
- Having things be fun for me is good too :)

Also, if we focus on letting people set up "realms" that don't necessarily have a universal game state it's not that hard (but some realms can voluntarily share, and you can reuse your identity)

If it doesn't pan out, the fediverse is doing pretty good right now. Maybe I can introduce some new and interesting things.

@cwebber Now, does it assume a network with 100% uptime?

@astraluma Hopefully not. You can connect as long as your connection is up and going. Like minecraft servers where people shut things down for a while and then resume them, you can connect when both you and the server can. No big deal if either is down, hopefully. There will be other game servers to play on.

@cwebber Oh, I missed "what is spritely actually", I thought we were back on actor models.

@astraluma I'm working on an actor model (Goblins) and the first use is an AP server + game server (Spritely)

@cwebber Yeah, I missed the bit where you actually said what spritely is. Last I remember, it was a mystery project that used actor models.

@cwebber

That sounds like a game of Nomic with its rules tailored for roleplaying.

@cwebber i have considered building something like second life using AP as a starting point

@kaniini Cool! I'm not planning on doing 3d games because I want the barrier to entry to build things to be as low as possible.

I will probably build MUDs or top-down 2d games using the Liberated Pixel Cup assets (which we designed the LPC style guide with this kind of project in mind)

@cwebber It can only be a good idea.
So federated werewolf game were my first idea in that space.
You join a game by talking to a bot, get a role attributed, you talk on the local/federated timeline on what is goimg on, you get a bot for votes, everynight something happen, people stick for a while.
But I can see rpg working well too.
The mistery, crime solving games where you have to trawl the fediverse to solve the puzzle would be superfun.

@cwebber there are a few people that have in caracter account already. We are not far off from being to have people with set role and aspirations yet interacting as traditionnal NPC.
With a bit of a script and a sensible bot, you could guide people thrpigh the fediverse while playing a quest of some sort.

@kyzh @cwebber

That make me think of Neverwinter Nights 2.

You had a lot (still ?) RP servers where the admin could make NPC to interact with the players.

Also, players could play NPC in the case you needed more freedom with the storyline.

@cwebber what you're trying to do sounds a lot more complicated than what i'm trying to do but i think people in general are really interested in seeing federated gaming actually

@cwebber that sounds very cool. Is it going to be only for gaming? I mean, will you have to extend the protocol specifically for gaming, or does AP already support sharing information beyond text, images, links, that needs a special client to create and display?

@cwebber I like the idea of a federated game but please consider that gamification is not a good thing per se. Trying to increase the engagement of a platform by attaching some candies is something you should look at with caution. In my opinion it leads to bad outcomes because it blends different purposes and therefore offuscates retroaction processes.
It's just a prospective. :-)

@olistik The game system will mostly be about friends setting up game worlds for friends/communities, rather than about trying to make money or sell attention.

@cwebber I was mainly worried about the latter. It's nice that you already put some thoughts. 👍
Is this OSS already?

@cwebber Do you mean like "farmville" or "mafia wars"?

@tealturtle no, more like a MUD you can spin up for you and your friends.
