With all the talk of #ForkOff I've been thinking about how to address some of the hard problems of safety, privacy, and autonomy on federated social networks.

I have put my thoughts down in a (very) rough draft to hopefully start a conversation and get some of your thoughts.

@maloki 👆 this is what I was talking about yesterday in regards to that ActivityPub XMPP idea

@polymerwitch @maloki What's the reason for using XMPP for private communication instead of ActivityPub? ActivityPub is private by default, protocol-wise... Mastodon is public by default in its usage, but the standard isn't (it uses email-like addressing)

@cwebber @maloki XMPP is used for realtime push and both e2e and more granularity on what is visible in those separate outboxes. This can all be done on an ActivityPub outbox, but it would take engineering a bunch of solutions (OMEMO, visibility on virtual outboxes, etc) that come pre-baked with XMPP. This is more an implementation specification for an ActivityPub connected project than a whole new specification
