How we treat our teachers is a complete disgrace in this country.

We spend more time talking about how teachers build up our future but there is no future for teachers. We simply do not pay them enough to survive.

We've built a career where the first word out of any teacher to a prospective teacher on learning they want to become a teacher is "why?" followed by "why would you do that to yourself?"

@craigmaloney I do not understand how we got here. I talk to individuals, and most seem to respect teachers, but we've managed to create a system that does not value teachers. Perhaps it comes from general attitudes about education in the US? That seems, in general, to be less valued by the people I talk to, and many people seem to think school districts just waste money.

@cstanhope I think it's in part that the USA thinks that schools should be run like a business and should make money like a business. This has lead to some really strange ideas of how to value education.

@craigmaloney Good point. There's a related attitude that education should be judged entirely on what is valuable to potential employers.

@cstanhope Yeah, I think that's the most dangerous attitude in education. It's exacerbated by the high cost of education and the desire for your education to map directly to your ability to pay for it.
