I sometimes run games in Swedish where we have the elegeant and concise word "Varelseslag" which just rolls off the tongue.🏇🏇 It means something like "type of being"

@Capheind @Sandra @kensanata

@Sandra @kensanata

Huh. "Type of being" reminds me of ontology and the study of how we know.... I bet the philosophers have tried to organize "types of beings"...

Not sure what "category" are you would be as comprehensible.

I basically want everything from “OK you are a robot” “you are a ghost” [uh, not to start getting into a lot of the ableist or racist slurs that have similar themes to those two concepts] to “you’re just from this one village”. Something super vague and broad, the flavor will have to come through in the specifics instead of in this term. But again, I feel that the ship maybe already has sailed now that Paizo and WotC already seem to have settled on their terms.

Also, I’m not American so I should just not get a say it in at all. We have our own messed up racism over here in Sweden (i.e. maybe we have more to say against the messed-up–ness of depictions of Roma peeps). If racialized Americans are happy with the games then that’s good enough for me👍

@Sandra @alienghic @kensanata @Capheind How is this an "American" thing. RPGs are like rock n roll, they belong to the world

@Capheind @alienghic @kensanata @Capheind

How it’s an American thing? We are talking about the American language edition of the game to be released in a region that has some pretty messed up politics around this stuff. Other languages can find their own solution in their translated versions of the game.

That’s not to say Sweden is OK:

Also I’ve run into American right wing ideologues linking to Swedish racists, so I have had some hints about Sweden’s issues.

Yeah. Not only do we have classism and racism pretty tightly mixed together, we also have a party founded by literal 1930’s nazis represented in the Riksdag. They’re in a minority position and they have “disavowed” but still.

@Sandra @alienghic @kensanata @Capheind Yeah but the American english editions are sold internationally arent they?

America just has, uh, kind of a different journey ahead of itself than we have. We have more recently repeated some of your older mistakes (and vice versa, with the rise of Trumpism mirroring the European far right). It’d be wrong if some lily-assed Euro chick like me sits on a throne over here and dictate how the American gaming community best solves this problem.

@craigmaloney @alienghic @kensanata @Capheind @Capheind I’m sometimes proud of reading some of my fave 1960s Swedish writers and musicians (on the topic of American racism, or on jazz and blues) but then I look at where we’re at now over here and I just facepalm. Glass house thoroughly installed.

Charlie Stross has been theorizing that we are currently facing an international fascist movement.

Yeah, there is a lot to that (“We’re told that after the war
the Nazis vanished without a trace—
but battalions of fascists
still dream of a master race”) but it’s easy to get oblivious to our own complicitness in these structures. I still think, say, and do racist things every day, or benefit off of others who do. Your classic timber in own eye type situation…

That’s not to let the more obviously guilty skull-on-cap villains off the hook, not at all. Just that we need to remember to also walk our own walks while we are chewing this gum.

Black Americans find that well meaning white Americans tend to disappear when breaking down systemic racism involves individual sacrifice.

I know of whites in single family neighborhoods saying "We have to have highways, but you can't build them near my home".

I believe this is a greater problem with racism than with sexism, because sexism’s roles affect both women and men negatively (that’s not to dispute feminism’s basic tenet that women overall are worse off than men are under patriarchy, just to say that the new world we wanna build has opportunity to make things better for everyone) while racism’s hierarchies are often presented as more zero-sum. “Sacrifices? How about those are made Over There, over in That Neighborhood, instead of ours…”

Racism is also classism’s most potent wedge issue. I know, I know, they are taking aim at LGBT and women too, but since their basic tenet is to steer conflict away from class lines and more along any other line, racism is one of the most enduring and powerful wedge issues. The original wedge issue, arguably.

I think humanity isn’t geared towards survival of the fittest individual (thankfully). Instead, we are a flock or herd animal, we take care of the group, we want what’s good for the group. But in the cosmic village (#HippieSandraConfirmed), it’s difficult for people’s instincts to adjust to just how big the group of people on this wayward planet. People grasp anything that can simplify things into “us” vs “them”. It’s blindingly frightening for humans to open our eyes to the vertiginous truth that the people Over There are our own cousins, brothers, sisters, selves. That we are all one.

(That’s not to advocate for a “color-blind” lack of awareness of oppressive structures. We need to see how unfair the world is in order to fix it.)
