Remember when Steve Jobs came back to Apple and removed all of the confusing model numbers so you had a clear idea of what it was that you were purchasing?

Apparently Apple doesn't remember. The fact that John Gruber wrote more than his usual minimalist comments about their branding and what each moniker means is a clear indication that Apple is not the same "we've done the thinking for you" company of old.

I tried to find Steve Jobs own words on model numbers, but apparently every "business guru" out there has their think-piece about the burnished version of Steve Jobs capturing that SEO.

Here's a take from one of the advertising folks that worked with Steve Jobs:

@craigmaloney I really liked the 4-product grids. Small/large, consumer/pro. Done. Only time they violated that was the MacBook Air, which was an extra small/pro entry.

@mdhughes @craigmaloney I'm sure it's nice when you're buying new; it's terrible for maintenance and repair. I just tried to repair my wife's old MacBook Air, and I ended up ordering two batteries because they changed the guts while keeping the same name (and the same small text model number). I still don't have the right charger, because they've changed that so many times. The need for versioning doesn't go away just because you try to hide it.

< ( we’ll list whether our product is small/large, consumer/pro, and then put a complex specific model number on the sticker underneath! )

( yeah, let’s go with it except that last part. the idiot’s’ll buy it three times as much that way, and we can just buy our way out of any suits and still make a huge profit. ) >

@phooky @mdhughes Honestly I'm surprised (not surprised) that Apple doesn't have a manifest of parts based on serial number. That would be the best of both worlds.

That said, since Apple is the bastion of preventing folks from repairing their items without an ~acolyte~ genius present then perhaps that's just wishful thinking.

@craigmaloney I liked when there was just one iPhone model. :)

@brion 🎼 It comes in any #colour you like so long as you like #black. 🦄
