Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

Apparently Yelp is replacing the delivery numbers of restaurants with number that go through Grubhub:

For those playing along at home Yelp owns Grubhub, so that's not remotely shady at all. Nosiree.

Fuck Yelp and their Internet Racketeering bullshit.

Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@craigmaloney my wife, after I just told you about this: "Oh, thanks for telling me, I was thinking about may be starting ordering via Grubhub, but not anymore!" :-)

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@craigmaloney ugh that's shady. There's a company in my country that also does this and it took me a couple of calls before I realized what was happening.

Been looking up phone numbers in restaurant websites and homepages directly ever since.

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@polychrome @craigmaloney This isn't even the first time they've done this. There was a hubbub a few years ago for IIRC this exact same thing.

Also for making their services opt-out rather than opt-in and billing businesses for it. You had to make an account to turn it off.

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@polychrome @craigmaloney Or it might have been from last year when this article is from. XD

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing, alcohol

@bluestarultor @polychrome Ah, nice. I didn't read the date, because it came up from another feed I follow:

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@bluestarultor @craigmaloney wait they joined businesses to a service without asking and started billing them for it?

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@polychrome @craigmaloney Something like that and I think it was them. Let me try to dig up a link.

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@polychrome @craigmaloney I must be conflating the billing with some other awful thing they did, but I'm like 90% sure they did something somehow to cost people money. It's hard to keep track of how awful they are.

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@bluestarultor @craigmaloney I did hear of a thing where a company started replacing the businesses phone numbers to their delivery service instead on their directory and if you wanted your real number displayed you had to open an account for your business.

They didn't charge the company as much as funneling all orders through their delivery service and standing between the business and the customers. Which is already bad enough.

This might have been the thing?

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@polychrome @craigmaloney Might be, yes.

Also I found an article from April about how they ran a promotion for $10 off $30+ orders and made the restaurants take the hit of the discount.

At least that was opt-in, apparently, but the article also mentions restaurants are locked into paying for placement in search results.

re: Yelp, Grubhub, Swearing

@polychrome @craigmaloney They also charged fees for calls that lasted more than 45 seconds, whether it resulted in an order or not, which may have also been part of it.
