Thank goodness there wasn't a second amendment about nudism or we'd be talking about how wearing pants is a god-given right.

@craigmaloney I think whether or not one supports the right to own a gun or to keep it in a vehicle, locked or not, having a patchwork of municipal laws regarding something that is being carried between cities is a bad idea. I totally agree with the spirit of the law itself, but I also agree with the lawsuit that it needs to be enacted at the state level and not the municipal level. The article's characterization as "wanting the right to store a gun in an unlocked vehicle" is disingenuous.

@craigmaloney This is the problem with the American approach to all contentious issues. You have one group trying to criminalize something by making it more and more inconvenient and laying tripwires all over the place, and another who won't accept any restrictions at all, and ultimately rule of law ends up being the true victim. We've done the same with drunk driving laws, continually reducing the limit to the point that we're arresting people for driving with no measurable impairment.

@freakazoid Considering there's no will at all at the federal level and the State of Michigan legislature is pretty much a joke then there's going to be patchwork laws like this to try to fix a broken system.

@craigmaloney I guess it's a legislative form of vigilantism in that way: not good for rule of law but sometimes the only remaining recourse when the people with the power won't act. Perhaps the attention will get the state to act.

@freakazoid @craigmaloney "rule of law" isn't ever going to solve gun violence. in fact, it maintains it. cops have a monopoly on gun violence, and all violence.

there's a big messy combination of problems that result in USA's gun problems, but they mostly have to do with capitalism, the manufactured crises it needs to survive, white supremacy, and the military-industrial complex that makes it possible.
