Newbie tip: Mastodon doesn't show the number of favs/boosts until you click on a toot, and also you won't necessarily see the full number of favs/boosts even then, especially if you're on a newer instance whose members aren't following that many remote accounts yet (only boosts/favs/replies from followed users are shown).

My advice: just focus on the content and the connections rather than the engagement metrics. Because that's what matters anyway. 😊

Think good housing thoughts - unexpectedly searching :(

Having moderated a large online community for about a decade now, I'm finding the collective arguing about CW protocol and kindness vs. freedom interesting and familiar and tiring and valuable all in a mix.

Community self-identification is a weird process, and I think I am mostly glad that mastodon doesn't by its very structure require the answer to be monolithic and universal.

But I will tip my hand a little and say that erring on the side of kindness is pretty much always defensible.

@chris Here's the source, let's make the complicated version together, for people who care about correctness. v1 targeted broader audience.

------

Toot by user
Foo;

if (Am I following Foo?) {
Show in "Home";
} else {
if (Is Foo a local user?) {
Show in "Local timeline";
} else {
if (
Did someone on my instance follow
Foo?
) {
Show in "Federated timeline";
} else {
This toot never even
reached my instance.
}
}
}

There isn't enough patience in the world for people who actively put obstacles in front of others who struggle daily with maintaining happiness. We don't all share the same circumstances, and most of us aren't fortunate enough to have a life of optional suffering and voluntary anxiety.

good manners and a little consideration takes almost no effort and can help improve the tone and energy of an individual or an entire community. Don't drain it. Fill it back up. Top it off.

Rainy PNW morning, pretty to watch but I got work to do. Gonna be a long weekend (of work). Sad but true: SO much better than sitting around reading the news being livid and depressed. Thanks tooters for understanding that refusing to partake in disaster *right now* doesn't mean being uninformed or uncaring. *hugs* to those who appreciate em!

May you be loved.
May your good fortune increase
May you be free from all shame and suffering.
May you be free from all aversion and attachment.
I wish you well.

About risk profile:

- Mastodon is like email because you can't delete federated toots
- Mastodon is like twitter in that Google's search bots index it, unless your admins robot.txt it away
- Mastodon is like being a teenager because the people that own your instance can see all your private stuff

Have a talk with your admin about their policies.

By default, assume everyone will be able to read your toots forever.

PSA: Please use the CW button to tag political posts so that people who do not wish to view political content do not have to. icosahedron.website/media/bqDT

"Let's play a game, to help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same."

As you settle into Mastodon, be sure to learn the lingo:
- "toot": a tweet
- "tusking": starting a pointless fight with another user
- "woolly": going viral, as in "wow, that toot really went woolly"
- "extinction event": when a whole instance goes down
