#seattle dancers and never-tried-it might-like-to-dancers: I'm hosting a low-key free intro to partner dance, waltz, maybe polka, this Friday the 15th. Followed by a DJd dance with the energetic travelling versions of those dances -- if you like East Bay Waltz, or Friday Night Waltz, we need you!
Not dress-up, no partner or experience needed, we aim to teach enough that you know if you'd like it before you get bored.
So far AI and Big Data are just being used to wage war on the poor, rather than on poverty.

Indy game devs, here's an idea: You control sheep dogs and have to herd sheep through crazy obstacles. Watch this video for inspiration:

CBC: a 20-minute video story on nuclear fusion, contrasting the US National Ignition Facility, an international consortium's ITER, and a scrappy startup in BC.
Interesting fact - Triton, Neptune's largest moon, was probably once a dwarf planet, stolen from the Kuiper Belt. https://twitter.com/WorldAndScience/status/948433842985209856/photo/1 source: https://twitter.com/WorldAndScience/status/948433842985209856

Read Nick Harkaway's "Gnomon". It is an astounding novel, mystery, thought piece - everything.
Why I Don't Think Content Addressing Is The Answer
There's a lot of interest in content-addressed distributed stores today, where you punch in a hash of your content (a file) and get that file back.
tldr: Superficially this looks nice, but I think this is a bad idea and we will deeply regret it if we go this route.
The reason: you need BOTH a hash AND a formal 'location' . The hash is there to warn you if the document has been altered in transit.
It can't do that if it's ALSO the location!

They do crowd-funding of solar panel installation loans. I invested some money in a loan for an affordable hosing project in San Bruno to install solar back in 2013. Getting my 4.5% yield and feel good points.
There haven't been any other investment opportunities that I can see. Have you been able to invest in more projects?
A series that's lacking an ending
Is surely a thing that's worth mending

Anyone want a limerick? Give me a topic and I'll attempt to write one. Quality emphatically not guaranteed.
Pro tip: If you are a programmer who needs to write a self-eval at the end of the try this:
1) Throughout the year, write your git commits with valid markdown, making sure to link out to JIRAs, issues, etc
2) when you have something you think you'll want in the review at the end of the year, put a tag in the commit (e.g. eoypr)
3) at the end of the year just run this command:
`git log --author=me --after="January 1, 2017" --grep="eoypr" > review.md`
Was just relieved to see that my voter registration finally went through after my second attempt. My wife & I moved in March and we had one failed registration attempt in June. Our second attempt was in October and that must have finally gone through in the last couple of weeks. Lesson: if you aren't registered to vote, do it really early so you can vote in the 2018 midterms and help effect much needed change.
If all the books I read in 2018 are half as good as The Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher (aka Ursula Vernon) then it'll be a very good year indeed! http://ow.ly/mhSQ30hxn7m #reading

And while you are there on Amazon, why not just buy Mary Beard's 'Women and Power.' They even have a bundle deal with Beard and Wilson together.
Happy new year everyone!
The year we use is the tropical year. This is measured from equinox to equinox and is 365.24219 days in length. Contrast this to our Gregorian calendar year which averages out to 365.2425 days.
The actual time it takes to make one orbit of the Sun is the sidereal year as measured from fixed star to fixed star. This is 365.2526363 days. This difference is due to the precession of the equinoxes.
