@kensanata I'm thinking about how, as a mastodon client, logging in and out of various specialized instances would be useful/distracting/annoying. (Maybe everyone does that more than me?)
If the definition of Unlisted were slightly different, you could post things only to followers of the tag. Maybe that's worth suggesting!
@kensanata I always have a pane open to the hashtag for my city, which gets some but not all of the local events Mastodonites are hosting, and advertising that seems spammy to me, and local politics.
How would you use a city-specific instance? I've been wondering if setting one up as an alternative listserv/irc/slack would be practical, or if having to log into it with a separate persona would be too annoying. (If no separate persona, what gain?)
I guess I'm interested in meeting people, talking about local politics and events, possibly going to the movies together, that kind of thing. But I'll have to think about a way to organize on Mastodon. Would that be a separate account with a #zurich focus? How do you do it, if you're also interested in local stuff? Did you just set up an instance for local stuff?
@cripdyke You're welcome, in two senses!
I wish I could remember that acronym. There's probably a better discussion of the problem linked to it.
Protip:
When designing a user interface, imagine some old woman using it, say Margaret Hamilton, and she's clicking your app's buttons and saying to you, as old people do,
"Young whippersnapper, when I was your age, I sent 24 people to the ACTUAL MOON with my software in 4K of RAM and here I am clicking your button and it takes ten seconds to load a 50 megabyte video ad and then it crashes
I'm not even ANGRY with you, I'm just disappointed."
@aardrian
If you don't need to walk on it, mixed perennial herbaceous borders are the lowest effort and best for pollinators. Check out what the Xerces Society recommends for your biome.
To be able to run around and loll on it, add tiny clover and maybe chamomile or daisies, and mow it high and often and with a sharp blade. Don't fertilize; the clover is enough. Don't water it in summer. Dry grass is still cool to the feet and the growing points aren't dead, they're waiting for the rain.
@aardrian You know, I think that's only about two-thirds accurate, although the worst lawn culture is even more damaging than they imply.
Grasses and grazers co-evolved when global climate got drier; what grasses are Really Good At is (a) surviving dry seasons and (b) surviving being trampled and also cut off just above ground level. So grass and its niche-sharers are *great* at being a live cover where a lot of people want to be outdoors.
OK, the new #Mastodon admin only instance is now live at https://tootmin.network
If you're an instance admin, please drop me an email at invites@tootmin.network with your instance URL and username, I'll then review and get you an invite.
Please boost this toot, as the Tootmin Network will give us admins a place to collaborate and discuss Mastodon administration away from our respective instances.
Thanks!
@starbreaker Potentially actually intellectual, and potentially kind and useful, given that the romance is supposed to be joyful and growthful for both parties. I think good romances often show the damage done *to* men *by* patriarchy. The damage is often subtle, though, or kind of disguised by the hero's enormous wealth.
@cripdyke @CountZero And getting to know people -- lots of people have posted a "I'm new here! I like discussing [a long string of hashtags].
Then anyone looking for the hashtag should find you.
@cripdyke @CountZero There's a natty acronym for "maintain your work on a server you control, link to it on the social platforms", but I can't remember it.
Personally I like the links that have almost summary text, not teasers. THat makes it feel less spammy to me, less emotionally exhausting and less of a unilateral use of my attention.
@tcql Can you recommend anythng that works on series in both time and space?
@KthulhuKat aaaaaaah been there fingers crossed for you.
Tolkien estate apparently did not like the movies. So we must needs wait for the copyright expiration before we can expect the movie of Berenice and Lúthien, the woman who entered Sauron’s tower full of werewolves and vampires. So , what’s that, 1973+70 years? 90 years? More!? Ask yourself: do you want copyright to be extended? Fuck that shit.
OMG! Pay-what-you-want feminist bicycle centered sci-fi and apocolayptic stories from a tiny publisher! What's not to love? Only thing missing is a CC license

"knows enough C to be dangerous" is a phrase that denotes any possible unit of information regarding C.
So then, then might "ₖC" be an information-free unit of measurement of information?
