what does it say about me that when I'm mentally exhausted and socially anxious I go to Mastodon?

How is it that an image of the Golden Gate Bridge still causes bowl-me-over nostalgia about the bay area, and some how evokes the hope and promise of the West and California and the infinite possibility of the future?

@creatrixtiara I'm very much looking forward to what you'll share!

Is this (rather bizarre to me) hostility towards discussing politics on Mastodon to the point that ROT13 became some sort of "solution" the reason I got dogpiled to hell my first weekend here after talking about racial dynamics on Mastodon? What was the full story behind this? What sort of culture thinks talking about politics needs to be behind a content warning? Is me talking about the intersections of my life & society in need of a CW because it's political? what the hell?

@creatrixtiara I'm an outdoor educator slash web developer now living in Montana. I work on prison activism (Black & Pink and Between the Bars), do occasional work with rad.cat, and other web dev stuff. In the summer I get to work at an awesome outdoor survival school. Long-time environmental and social justice activist. Thanks for the prompt to draw folks out of their shells! Has helped transform some feelings of fear to solidarity for me.

@CobaltVelvet @sysadmin1138 Is it possible in the setup to modify /etc/hosts on the machine that's making requests? That would pre-empt any local DNS lookups and python-requests would send the correct SNI.

@natematias Finishing a wat. Starting on a wat. Look I made a wat.

Well... there never was a wat.

if thou are arguing that singular 'they' is incorrect, thou had better not be using singular 'you'

Reading about how the characteristics of the first settlers in a new territory set the tone for the way that territory then develops. See e.g. anti-authoritarian Scots and Irish in midland USA. Something similar true of social networks?

@elplatt looks like we're still working on getting past the point where the bulk of conversation is about the platform on which it is happening.
