Think about the Followers that REM would have got if only they had waited until 2017 and sang about Mastodon instead of Orange Crush 🤔

I believe a lot of conflict in the old west could have been avoided completely if cowboy architects had just made their towns big enough for everyone.

The new release of Signal has support for encrypting and sending arbitrary files. That's a very big deal: for many users it has long been an unsolved problem to securely share documents or recordings, and now it's as easy and sending a text. Update out now for Desktop, iOS, and Android!

With news of Unroll.me selling user inbox info to Uber, lots of people are repeating "if you're not paying for it, you're the product."

I've said before, and will continue to say, that that is the wrong formulation. Sometimes you pay for it and you're still the product – look at US ISPs. Sometimes you don't pay for it and you're not the product – free software.

The real question is whether a software or service empowers users, which can't be boiled down to whether you paid.

I don't see as much of what I think of as twitter "forms" here (e.g. tweets that take the form of "tfw when you x"). Some possible explanations:

1.The higher character limit obviates them

2. There's a perceived expectation that twitter-behavior should be eschewed

3. People just tend to act differently in a different context and are "starting over" cognitively

4. The set of people who would use those forms is not very coextensive with the set of people who would join Mastodon

Your mum and dad will fuck you up
you might not know it, but you will
fill up with your family’s faults
plus a bonus, what a thrill.

But mum and dad got mistaught too,
by fools in out of fashion hats.
Who’d play at drilling history,
and claw and fight and yowl, such cats.

Man will always hand down pain
It grows by unknown physics laws.
Why don’t you jump off this train?
Don’t bring up kids to catch your flaws.

I'll say this: choosing an instance is not just about the domain name, it's about do you trust the admin and what is this instance culture and _how does this instance enact that culture_, and circumscribing a non-toxic universe is a perfectly valid way to define a culture.

it is "multiocular O", a variant of Cyrillic O that is used in certain religious texts in a phrase that translates to "many-eyed seraphim" and basically nowhere else
