current jess status: there is 20 ft of metal conduit on my bed

it's pretty wobbly but that should be easy to fix on a beach
now i just need to make the antenna part...

@klocxia it's a small collapsable mast for an antenna

@catoutofbed
Neato. But why put an antenna on a beach? Don't people usually put them on top of their houses?

@klocxia
i can't get it into a good place here
a beach has nothing in the way and a lot less radio noise than the city

@catoutofbed @klocxia ham radio? Nice to see someone else into that on fedi

@kurisu @klocxia
more or less
not planning on transmitting out of this mast probably
hoping to receive from some weather satellites

@catoutofbed @klocxia nice, POES? Which antenna to get the cross polarization or are you not bothering, pointing and praying?

@kurisu @klocxia
for the moment targeting APT
gonna try with a v dipole and take the -2db hit from polarization, but if that doesn't work there's a quad dipole design i'm gonna try

@catoutofbed @klocxia yeah I've done a fair bit with apt. A lot nicer with an sdr because you get that nice wide fm receive bandwidth and its easier to compensate for Doppler.

@kurisu @klocxia
yeah
i know it's possible with an rtl-sdr so i'm gonna try to make that work

@catoutofbed @klocxia I've tried a few times with an ft-817 and its not nearly as good as a funcube dongle... If you have the right filters. The fun cube dongles filtering is pretty terrible compared to a larger rig, its just that a typical rig doesn't have wide enough fm bandwidth.

That and our quad helix fell down in a storm a few years ago.
@catoutofbed @klocxia don't recommend the quad helix tbh, quad dipole performed way better. You might have a different experience though.
