I'm trying to install Debian GNU/kFreeBSD with an old iso, the architecture name changed in the repos and it's the netinst. It's gonna be fun ^^

I managed to get apt working simply by modifying the sources.list after the minimal install. It's upgrading from jessie to sid 😂

Well Xorg is working out of the box. But has QWERTY layout 😔

Cheated by removing lightdm ^^

The list of non working stuff is huge but hey i'm tooting from a bare metal Debian/kFreeBSD system !

So I tried to load the i915kms module. There is a problem here and it's not hardware related since it's effed up on my 2 laptops.

Brightness control works thanks to acpi_video on the T530 but not on the 6450b.

Tried to install kfreebsd-11 from experimental. Cute kernel panic screen <3

It spawns a debugger, a pretty smart idea !

Kernel panic while trying to scan a picture 🙄

@julianaito
Is sane still a thing, and is it still terrible?

@catdad It's still the default scanning subsystem - it works well and has now decent user interfaces like Simple Scan (xsane is meh). But the command line interface is still the best option.

Here it crashes because of the GNU/kfreeBSD kernel, that is outdated and has no manpower to be fixed, sadly.

This Debian port seems doomed i guess.

@julianaito
Oh its kfreebsd. I thought Debian dropped that years ago

@catdad Yes and no, it's unofficial since Jessie, it's in the process to be fully moved to ports if i've understood well what the mailing list is saying.

And it's slowly dying anyway: qa.debian.org/popcon-graph.php

@julianaito
I tried it once years ago and it was OK, but didn't have the same meme value of hurd

@catdad It hasn't survived the hype it had when it was first released, and it's less good than it used to be.

It could be a real alternative if it had users and most importantly developers with good FreeBSD knowledge.

But there is no point for a FreeBSD developer to move to Debian.
