I wonder how much electricity the planet wastes in a day due to services unnecessarily requiring continuous connectivity instead of chunking their data and turning off the broadcasting devices (router, antenna, and so) between pulses.

The only reason I need my email to sync more than 3-4 times a business day is because people expect it to - same for my social networking, and so many other things that just assume constant connection because, well, that's a reasonable assumption.
