Running servers COSTS ACTUAL MONEY and doing it right is not simple.

We've got a good home here, let's help ensure the costs are, at minimum, sustainable. Beyond that there's still a lot of work to do, but you can help out right now, and your help WILL MATTER.

You really don't get to "identify as an ally"

Just fucking behave

If you're actually an ally, no matter the group you're allying with, they see you.

They might not trust you. They have their reasons.

Taking it personally is the quickest way to prove them right.

And they are right not to trust you.

If you don't have skin in the game, and you insist on sticking your "I'm a good guy" nonsense in their faces, you are not a good person; you're egotistical and toxic.

Maybe you don't realize it, but it's really fucking obvious to everyone else.

BE. Don't say.

Lessons from my 2017 auto loan:

Lenders don't publish payment schedules anymore. Why?

ALL loans are front loaded. They don't call them that because "those loans" are illegal. But "normal" now is interest accruing DAILY so the % interest you pay early in a six year (!!) loan is crazy high compared to the end.

Warning: You may think you're paying monthly on time. But if the bank thinks you're paying 30 days late every month your "final payment" can be $12,000.

@GeekDaddy @starbreaker It's not, though. It's no Walking Dead or Hunger Games, that's for sure. I think it's just that the protagonists are less average, and therefore less relatable to most people. It's not so much an "ordinary person finds themself involved in big stuff" as "curious person goes looking for trouble and finds it" that I think is an issue as well. I mean, are you saying it's just a bad show? Is that what you really mean?

@GeekDaddy @starbreaker They are either, like Dunkirk, about historical events that have happened, so you already know the good guys will win, or, like the TV shows you've mentioned, they're about/confirming things people know are real (corruption, terrorism) -- and there's still plot armor assuring you the good guys will win in the end, no matter how bleak it looks in the middle. MitHC doesn't have that even a little bit.

@GeekDaddy @starbreaker Man in the High Castle is well done, but honestly it's too depressing for anyone to have ever thought it would be popular. It makes you think too much, and in ways that challenge most people's comfort zones.

@GeekDaddy @starbreaker True, but does anybody anywhere (who isn't a Nazi themselves) really want to think long and hard about the Nazis winning? I've never even heard of Designated Survivor.

@GeekDaddy @starbreaker Well, Netflix isn't Amazon Prime, and House of Cards is set in the ordinary modern present-day, which is more appealing for most people than alt-history. Plus there's the added angle of having to put your mind in a place where the US lost WWII, which is another thing people don't want to think about.

@GeekDaddy @starbreaker I disagree that people didn't like "The Man in the High Castle". It just wasn't the massive success they were hoping it would be. Everyone I know of who's watched it did indeed like it, but that's mostly been people who are interested in political and historical stuff, which the average joe is really not.

1/2 TIL: "Windows Media Digital Rights Management (WMDRM) will no longer be supported after Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Windows 10, version 1607) is installed. After installing this update, you will no longer be able to play music or video files that were protected by this rights management technology."

To their credit, Microsoft is providing mechanisms to strip the DRM. But it's going to be quite a gotcha to people who don't read the fine print on their involuntary software updates.

I'm apparently at that point in the story I'm writing where my brain refuses to move forward and instead goes: "You know that big decision the main character made, that caused this whole situation to be this way? Let's just think about what would have happened if they chose differently. I'll force you to stay on track."

Every time I see "nb" in someone's toot or profile, I always think it means "nota bene". I've been a writer for too long. #nb #oldfart

So it's 8:45pm and I feel like it's too early to go to bed but there's no real reason to stay up either.

@generica My husband immigrated as a teenager, and had always known he was coming here, so he worked hard on his accent as a kid. He doesn't have one really (if anything, he sounds like the educated New Yorker that he became). People are always surprised to find out he wasn't born here.
