@KevinMarks nails it in his 'Mastodon Theory':
"In a classic silo, who you share a server shard with is an implementation detail, but choosing an instance does define a neighbourhood for you. Choosing to join witches.town or awoo.space or botsin.space will give you a different experience from mastodon.social"
Somehow mastodon's instance architecture puts the human element back into the center of the digital experience.

Mikeal on how to build sustainable #opensource --
"The title of 'Maintainer' is reserved for those already engaged in the project. 'Community' refers to a project’s entire ecosystem, including its users. Solutions to sustainability that are not anchored to the community can’t scale along with a project’s adoption."

@luisbg *squints, trying to remember each* Pragmatic Programmer, from memory. More about broad approaches and thinking, being part of a team etc (if I remember correctly), where Clean Code was more specifically about coding itself. PP sets the scene for coding to happen. Both books are foundation texts, but I believe being a good dev is more than just writing 'good' code 😊
Ok, now I watch as the #Mastodon world de-federates from #pawoo
– I am thinking, is my instance secure? does my instance admin pay attention what is being posted by others on it? Should I be worried that my admin hardly posts stuff at al? Has he forgotten his instance? Am I going to get 'De-Feded' because of the actions of others who I do not even know?
And, how does an instance get un-de-feded, later? How do I as a mere user advocate for that?
Ja, ihr könnt auch in den BGP Statistiken rum malen wenn ihr genügend IP Space habt.
You know what would be awesome? If there was an integration with Google Translate on Mastadon so I could read everything on system.

Why am I screwing around with VMs and container services? I have actual metal I can run this on.
Hm. Smaller networks full of people, not brands, community over monetization...

ow.
The best part of Mastodon is that it can continue to exist because users want it to exist. It doesn't have to find a business model, it can just be a wonderful public service / open protocol.
Really want some mastodon instances to go full-metafilter and just charge $5 for an account
I love staring into the federated timeline and watching people address their own instance domain denizens. I feel like I get to peek into someone else's social world for a brief moment, with just the right amount of context to keep it mysterious and charming.
Time till first Mastodon<->Twitter bridge? I give it about a month from now.
Found out Mastodon is a take on something called GNUsocial.
Reminds me of when Google Talk was a fancy branded port of Jabber.
Good point number 6 about Mastodon: It's open source. WE HAVE THE POWER
General rule of thumb when it comes to data processing:
Q: "Is it more than 100 people that need a specific change?"
A: "Make a Dev Do It"
Q: "Is it less than 100 people?"
A: "Do that shit by hand."
