Our birdbox had it's first ever family this year - and today, we've been seeing the first flights of the chicks.

Live streaming via periscope (also so I can watch without disturbing them):

@AverageMarcus yes indeed... though I've not currently got any android devices

"First do it, then do it right, then do it better."

In the spirit of Addy Osmani I'm pushing live v0.1 of
unslump.me/ warts'n'all.

While the API basics are in place, supporting search/categories, most front-end links are inactive.

Next up is probably Auth and Submit. octodon.social/media/GU5Ns47GF

@jellydiver I always carry a paper notebook, for ad hoc thoughts (and sketches + doodles). I otherwise use Evernote a lot, detailing each step in research and dev projects... and also a 'plus24' journal where I detail some of the good things from each day. Otherwise pseudo photo journaling - I spend the time to curate the photos we take, and make 'reflecting on the weekend' collages each Monday morning.

Mastodon newbie protip: don't click the "remote follow" button. Just copy the user's URL and paste it into the search bar of your home instance, then click the follow button (the little icon of a person with a "+" on it).

Not only is "remote follow" slower and more awkward; it's a potential security risk, because a malicious instance could trick you into giving them your password (if you're not paying attention to the URL bar).

@AverageMarcus that was exactly what I would love too.... and certainly happy to support some enterprising developer/team if they were to crowdsource the funding for it

@AverageMarcus I'm using two approaches - there is an ipad app 'Oyakodon' which lets you swipe between accounts (though has adverts).
And on desktop, as each instance is a separate domain I keep different tabs logged into each instance - using a browser that I don't usually use (Safari) and with notifications allowed.... which is working surprisingly well.

Well continues to (predominantly) impress, and so I'm going to try joining some other instances (as well as probably setting up my own instance now that I know about the activities of @hugo ) - though I'm not yet sure how sustainable that will be...

I now also exist on toot.cafe as bseymour@toot.cafe

It looks like the export/import of followers/blocks has worked well, so I'll start trying to thread the accounts together.

'How will it end?'

@FadingAway as always, some good arguments both ways... I can imagine only a very small subset of people having a high level of interest in my family activities, and could end up with a poor signal/noise ratio on my stream for them... but then, I also agree with you, it's my one life - all interrelated.

@TQ i might follow your lead, and see if it might also be interesting to consider a related group for people who want to teach kids to code?

I've also been slowly trying to put together something at codeparents.org/

and also wrote some of my thoughts on the matter : 12devsofxmas.co.uk/2017/01/day

(btw, really liking then bi-lingual approach)

I'm undecided if I should include activities on (they're a pretty key part of my life, and the context in which most other things are undertaken)... or if I should setup a separate personal instance for those.

Any thoughts?

But for now:
the Easter Holidays as I head into London.

@twistedonion ah, I was fortunate as an early backer to get a lifetime deal on the service... otherwise, you're right, the yearly subscriptions could have put me off too.

@TQ I've certainly got some KS projects very long overdue. This one was recommended by a friend who knew the team - and I think will be available independently of KS if ever you're tempted.

@TQ it was originally a kickstarter, with their first batches coming to fruition. First impressions are really positive... I'll start trying it for real later in the week... will post how I get on with it.

timeular.com/

@hugo I had been considering firing up a digital ocean droplet to run my own private instance on, but if you're planning to do the ongoing updates and general management that could be a real time saver...

My ZEI time tracker from Timeular just arrived, and it looks and feels fantastic.

@hugo looks interesting Hugo - are you supporting own domain yet?

Playing Frustration always makes me think of Queen's sublime Hot Space album.
