It's time for some game theory! No, seriously, this NPR report was good: game theorists explaining why airlines' practices of asking for volunteers when flights are overbooked don't work, and what would work better. npr.org/2017/04/13/523726313/h

@deathmtn I have this old high school friend who is a failure at humblebragging and therefore comes off as the smuggest person ever on Facebook. The few times I've seen him in person in the past few years, he's normal and as I remembered him. But his online persona is just so different. Is that his "highlights reel" presentation of himself or does it represent his fundamental self-image? Hard to tell. I've been told I write like I sound...

@repressedNerd It could definitely make you feel very watched... like why are there so many bots interested in me... if you don't know why.

@repressedNerd Apparently they are being created to federate the sites faster... if you have a new Mastodon site, you'd only see users from sites your users have followed. So if you follow a bunch of people automatically you get more content faster.

After years of running 2-4 miles often, I've been doing longer distances because of an upcoming 10 mile run. So far, my primary observation is that running 7-8 miles really changes your perspective on running 3-4 miles. That is good! But I also have a lot of blisters and it takes a lot of time, so I don't particularly regret not having tried this earlier.

A restaurant review to make you feel positively lucky for not having $400 to spend on a single meal.

Killing time at a Starbucks (groan) while my apartment is being shown by the rental company, and a guy just walked by the window in a "feminist as fuck" t-shirt, wheeling his small daughter in a stroller. :fist: This almost makes up for having to leave my apartment every Saturday during a window of time when (it seems) I always want to be eating lunch/showering/something. I hope they find a Nachmieter soon or that I get to see more woke Philadelphians out and about.

basically all western pre-renaissance art is bible fanart when you think about it. it really makes u think.

I just found the most amazingly perfect gift for my friend whose birthday is in August. Which is great, but I could really use some eurekas on the May, June, and earlier in August birthdays first...

@RebelMoogle Übrigens, ich hab bisher nicht mitgekriegt daß Sie Deutsch sind! Deutsch ist meine best Fremdsprache aber ich bin auch préparé à practiquer français , ce qui est devenu ma langue la plus faible. :/

@RebelMoogle There is a crime show that used to be on US Netflix called Engrenages/Spiral that was violent but engrossing. Learned a lot of swear words from it...

@Stoori Hoi! Ja, ik kan ook Nederlands beter lezen dan schrijven of verstaan. Ik was onlangs in Haarlem en heb daar een boek of vier gekocht, zodat ik meer thuis oefenen kan. In de VS hoor je weinig Nederlands!

@emily I think of it like picking a neighborhood--it doesn't have to be one that ALL your friends are in but as long as you have a few and find the locals agreeable, you're fine.

Is there a single person in the fediverse who does not like ? I wonder what about this platform is so enticing to those of use who are^H^H^H like cats?

@StephenReid Probably her finest quality is that she is very cute even when she is being annoying, and that she likes attention more than being naughty so she doesn't claw the furniture or anything.

@webetcaetera Le seul que j'ai trouvé est Amaroq mais il semble que ça fonctionne (?) très bien!

@grainne Sounds like she needs to step up her game! ;)

@Siphonay It's not quite that... since there are exactly two parties enshrined in our system, everyone has to sort themselves into one or the other. Third parties don't have the institutional power to interrupt the two-pole system (except sometimes in local politics). To participate you're essentially forced to pick one. Liberal/Green/Left/Pro-diversity tend to congregate and Conservative/Religious/Right/Business do too. Right now you see a lot of internal divisions in both parties!
