It's time for some game theory! No, seriously, this NPR report was good: game theorists explaining why airlines' practices of asking for volunteers when flights are overbooked don't work, and what would work better. npr.org/2017/04/13/523726313/h

After years of running 2-4 miles often, I've been doing longer distances because of an upcoming 10 mile run. So far, my primary observation is that running 7-8 miles really changes your perspective on running 3-4 miles. That is good! But I also have a lot of blisters and it takes a lot of time, so I don't particularly regret not having tried this earlier.

A restaurant review to make you feel positively lucky for not having $400 to spend on a single meal.

Killing time at a Starbucks (groan) while my apartment is being shown by the rental company, and a guy just walked by the window in a "feminist as fuck" t-shirt, wheeling his small daughter in a stroller. :fist: This almost makes up for having to leave my apartment every Saturday during a window of time when (it seems) I always want to be eating lunch/showering/something. I hope they find a Nachmieter soon or that I get to see more woke Philadelphians out and about.

I just found the most amazingly perfect gift for my friend whose birthday is in August. Which is great, but I could really use some eurekas on the May, June, and earlier in August birthdays first...

Is there a single person in the fediverse who does not like ? I wonder what about this platform is so enticing to those of use who are^H^H^H like cats?

My cat's wake-human-up ritual is becoming more elaborate. Show more

Just saw my first bad toot (the fourteen words) which garnered a "Last tweet of this kind before ban" message from an admin within 4 minutes. *raises a glass to our Mastodon hosts*

is it true that mastodon is actually a psyop created by hover and namecheap to spur people into paying crazy prices for hip domain names such as "balls.hypno.gongle.sigil", "godzone.fuck" and "will.i.am.shitner"

Things I won't miss from the bird place: Nazis, political bots, threads, , nested quoted tweets that don't pay off when you get to the bottom, institutional accounts that exist for PR without thinking about what content a follower wants to see, accounts that tweet with so many abbreviations and hashtags that you can't derive sense from it, brands that tweet the same content multiple times per day, being forced to make grammatical errors to fit in 140 characters, and oh yeah, Donald Trump.

I am responsible for a data center and am about to close on a house, so now I spend all my time thinking about air-conditioning.

The true test of mastodon will be if people use it to talk about anything other than mastodon

Hey! If you are experiencing that the timelines are out of sync you are NOT GOING CRAZY.

There's currently a backlog of just under 15000, last night it was 190000.
It's getting better! But until then your timelines will be a bit weird.

The processing is being improved as we are speaking!

Only thing I don't like about this so far: not knowing what it means to choose one mastodon server over another, and anxiety that I have chosen wrong for some reason I don't know yet. That said, I'm envisioning the Octodon as a many-armed furry prehistoric creature, which I rather like. And I don't *think* I'm having any problems with remote following.

I wonder if john fink (who I'm deliberately not atting by name) will see this. Testing testing... can we hear across the fediverse?
