even the title is a reference to being submissive and afraid

one of the only positive memories that i have of my first girlfriend is her telling me about her theory that Loveless by MBV is about gender confusion and teenage questioning, and she pointed out that Kevin and Belinda mixed their vocals so they're all completely androgynous and muddled. I like Hang Onto Your Ego more because it has that one line where Brian admits that he's also suffering from this, he's not just criticising stoners like in IKTAA

Pet Sounds is such a good album

Imagine making music all your life that affirms your pseudo-toxic-masculine beliefs and then suddenly releasing an album about how all that is bullshit and women aren't just objects made to cater to your every fantasy.

another pet sounds take: Here Today is actually about the shitty attitudes of nice guys and it's the internalised monologue of one of those people. This isn't a resistant reading, I think Brian intended this (and the whole album is about this)

I Know There's An Answer is the worst track on Pet Sounds but it wouldn't have been if it was Hold On To Your Ego (the original version)
