I am in a similar boat. You can try the ssris and see if you like them and if not you don't have to keep taking them, so you are still in charge. They say it takes a few months to really know if you like them. I never liked them and ended up getting valium instead that I take very occasionally. I had a good experience with SSRi (only a minor physical problem: some tremors)
The smell of valium is enough to make me sick.
Unfortunately the response varies quite a lot from person to person.
