Thinking it'd make sense to separate the web client from the actual #mastodon instance so you can run a headless instance which external clients connect to via API. Would require a registration API endpoint, though.

ostatus, Mastodon's base protocol, wasn't written with privacy in mind. It was written with the assumption that a poster would want everyone to be able to read the post, like on a traditional blog. The privacy features built onto Mastodon came out of early user demand and have proven immensely popular, but they're sort of birdhoused onto the protocol and not in the spec. It's time to consider formalizing these features in an RFC or similar document to improve on them.
@GinBaby @chris_martin @sonya It's good that people don't *need* to know implementation details. It's *important* that people continue to be *able* to know implementation details, should they choose to spend their attention that way. But these two values need not be in tension.
