The thing that made me switch to Mastodon was @blinry shutting down his Twitter account. I enjoy reading his thoughts and writeups and projects and I didn't want to miss them. As long as we're still using Twitter, we're not giving others an incentive to switch.

If you'd like to set up your own Mastodon instance, I created a basic guide. It runs you through Let's Encrypt and nginx settings so you'll have A+ SSL and IPv6 too (for instances.mastodon.xyz):
